We'll get right to the meat of today's issue, without my usual chit-chat. I'm having a VERY bad day because Alex went to duckling heaven, last night.

The whole idea in me taking him was to keep him alive until he was able to make it on the lake. He was doing so well - then he was gone. I miss him.

Privacy International, a worldwide organization looking at many issues, has a new project relating to the snooping on cellphone users, tracking them to build a personal profile provided to advertisers.

We believe that any system which uses personal data and communications should only be permitted in the presence of Informed Consent (Opt-In) models - a view which is diametrically opposed to the model of Opt-Out that the industry is lobbying so hard for.

To that end we have launched a new web site which will serve as our portal to the project including a blog and document archive of work carried out for the project.

The web site is called Ethical Networks and our pilot project is an Annual International Mobile Broadband Privacy Review.

Are Your Web Sites Ready for the Coming Selling Season?

I received an email that gives a different perspective on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and what's important. I'm passing it along to you for your consideration.

What a load of cobblers that SEO article is.

The things they say don't work any more have never worked. Well, not for years and years.

H1 tag, Singular - This is Very Important and it Works

The reason the article claims it does not work is because some idiot did not read the manual and decided to use multiple H1 tags on the same page. That does not improve the weighting of the words - it dilutes the content of each down to worthless.

Each tag has a meaning. Using the tag for any purpose other than that for which it is designed is to undervalue the use of the tag and send invalid messages to the search engine ranking algorithms.

Valid Code - Can be Very Important

The error in the article is in assuming that the W3C validator is able to recognize the many versions of invalid code out there. Not all errors are equal.

With the explosion in handheld units and TV screens being used to display the internet, valid code is much more than W3C validator passing. The converter parsers need to be able to convert your code to the XML or XHTML used by the many different browsers used by handhelds, etc. Valid code helps this process.

Keyword Density - the Gold Standard

There are more search engines than Google. Keyword density is like links: not all densities are equal. A well written page will rank very well on only one instance of a phrase, depending on the weighting factors applied to the words that make up the phrase.

Never confuse keyword density with keyword spamming. Densities in the 3-5% are a good starting point. The actual density depends on the density of the competition.

Links - Quality is King

Between 3 and 10 quality links are all that are needed for top rankings. One quality link is worth thousands of low quality links. You may notice that quality sites don't offer link pages or link exchanges - learn from the quality sites.

With SEO, all things are relevant to what the competition is doing. You have to combine all of what they do and be just 1% better.
